August Deal of the Month

Like Gawking Geeks reported recently, now more than ever there are some great reasons to upgrade your computer with an SSD.

These Solid State Drives do away with the spinning disks we've used in our Hard Disk Drives for decades, and instead store data on super fast Flash RAM similar to that you find in a portable USB Thumb Drive. The benefits of upgrading an SSD are numerous. They are many times faster and will greatly accelerate your computer's startup time and speed up your application launch times.

They are also more durable. With a normal Hard Drive, any number of things can go wrong. The motor that spins the disks can go bad. The super accurate servos that control the multiple delicate read/write heads can die. The disks themselves can become unbalanced or scratches during a drop. SSDs suffer none of these drawbacks.

For the last few years SSDs were an up and coming thing. They were both too expensive and held too little data to be worth buying for most computer users. But these days storage size increases are skyrocketing and prices are dropping, both of which are finally making SSDs affordable for use in the average computer.

For the month of August, Computer Repair in Tyler is offering a 10% discount on the purchase and installation of an SSD for your desktop or laptop. Even better, we're applying that same discount to moving your data from your slow Hard Disk Drive over to your new SSD. You'll notice an immediate difference, and with our Deal of the Month, you'll save some money too!

You can find us at 1331 South Beckham in the shopping center near the hospitals between the gas station and the Big Lots. If you have questions about this deal or any computer repair issue, give us a call at 903-858-4383 or email us at info@computerrepairintyler.com.

New Mac Virus Discovered

"Macs don't get viruses" has been a sort of unspoken rule for years, but it hasn't ever really been true. Certainly, there have been less viruses for Macs over the long term, and far fewer that spread as far and wide as some of the more damaging Windows viruses, but yesterday, another example of a Mac Virus surfaced.

This virus, a variant of a previous Mac virus called Fruitfly has managed to evade both anti-virus programs and Apple’s own limited built in virus protections for years. It is able to take screenshots, record keystrokes (and thus passwords!), and even access the webcam on Macs that have one. You can read more about this Virus and how it was discovered here.

Fortunately, now that this virus variant has been discovered it is being added to the databases of popular antivirus applications. That said, if your Mac is acting funny, it’s possible it could be infected by some virus or malware. At Computer Repair in Tyler, we have the latest virus scanning tools and can diagnosis even the oddest or most elusive problems.
If you need help with your Mac or PC, give us a call today at 903-858-4383, email us at info@computerrepairintyler.com, or stop on by at 1331 South Beckham next to the gas station near the hospitals.

June Deal of the Month: 10% Off Virus & Spyware Removal

Last month, the world saw the release and spread of a much higher than normal number of viruses and spyware programs. Most notably, the dangerous ransomware known as "WannaCry" infected and locked users out of hundreds of thousands of computers in only a few days thanks to targeting a Windows flaw originally discovered by the NSA. In the last few days, there have been rumors of similar hacking groups preparing to release new info on software vulnerabilities that could enable the quick spread of new viruses.

At Computer Repair in Tyler, one of the core services we offer is Virus and Spyware removal for Windows and Apple Macintosh computers, and to help combat this uptick in computer viruses, we're making our June Deal of the Month a discount on our Virus and Malware removal services. If your PC or Mac is acting funny or having weird issues, bring it to us and we can help you diagnosis and remove any viruses and spyware programs that filtered down from the Internet.

We can also help you if your computer has caught a piece of Ransomware that locks you out of your files and demands money to have them restored. In past cases, these ransomware programs have been poorly coded and have had flaws and workarounds that we have been able to research and use to help users get their files back without having to pay money to the hackers.

If you think your computer has caught a virus, bring it to us as soon as you can and mention our Deal of the Month to get a 10% discount. And remember, we can handle all your other computer repair needs, such as laptop screen replacements, operating system reinstalls, and hard drive data recovery, as well.

We are located at:
1331 South Beckham in Tyler, Texas, 75701. Look for us between the Big Lots and the gas station just south of the hospitals.

Microsoft Begins Warning About Websites With Outdated Security

Starting last Tuesday, Microsoft's Edge and Internet Explorer browsers started warning users about websites using the older SHA-1 security protocol. All the major browser makers have been recently begun phasing out support for this method of proving a webpage is secure. SHA-1 is mainly just a victim of its age. As our computers have gotten more and more powerful, older encryption standards like SHA-1 have to be discarded and replaced. So, if you see a warning about the security of a site you visit often, it might just be Microsoft doing its part to keep you safe on the internet.

That said, if you ever do see a security warning, double check what you are doing and how you got to that webpage. This is especially important to do if you just followed a link from an email, social media post, or untrustworthy webpage. Often times your browser knows what it is talking about when it puts up a warning. Sure, it may just be telling you about a site using an older security standard, but it might also be preventing you from giving out important personal information to a fake site that was made to look like a site you often visit.

Stay safe out there, and take comfort that Microsoft (and the other major web browser developers) are doing their part to help keep you protected.

Windows' Built-in Anti-virus Software Triggered Viruses Instead Of Blocking Them

Microsoft recently released word that its "Windows Defender" anti-virus software that has shipped with the last few versions of Windows had an unintended flaw that could, in some cases, provide hackers with a method to trigger the viruses. The problem was that Windows Defender would scan new downloads and emails for known viruses as well as some types of code that could be identified as new viruses. But, when some types of code were scanned to see what they did, those bits of code could themselves exploit a flaw in Windows Defender and gain unrestricted access to the host computer. This would let clever hackers use Windows Defender itself as a means to spread their viruses and malware.

This was a very serious issue that could have affected many millions of users. Microsoft learned of this problem last Friday, and to their credit, had a patch ready to go on Monday. Because Windows Defender updates itself every day or two, many systems will soon be receiving that patch making the problem vanish almost as quickly as it appeared. For anyone, like larger businesses who has automatic Windows Defender updates disabled, Microsoft recommends letting Windows Defender update itself again. Users can also trigger that update manually if they are concerned it will take the automatic update too long to kick in.

Tricky Hackers Use Unicode To Fake Website Addresses

There was a recent story posted on one of our favorite tech sites about how some clever hackers have managed to trick people by going to what they think are legitimate websites by taking advantage of the Unicode text system.

The Unicode system, which has been improving over the last two decades or more, has played a key role in letting our computers and mobile devices be able to easily display languages that don’t use the standard letters and symbols we are familiar with in the English alphabet. It is also responsible for letting us sent emoji pictures to each other. But some symbols in other languages tend to look a lot like what we think of as normal letters. By carefully buying up odd website addresses and using special strings of code in website urls, the hackers have been able to exploit these similar looking letters by making an address that looks like it goes to a familiar site when it in fact goes to a fake page designed to steal login information or install a virus or spyware.

Some web browsers, like Google’s Chrome, have wised up to this trickery and make sure the user can tell the difference between the address used by a real site and the lookalike address, but others, like Firefox and Opera, have not. Until all the major web browsers get on board, you might want to consider tying in a website address yourself instead of relying on a link sent to you in a text or email.

If you think you may have gone to an illegitimate site or were tricked into installing a virus on your computer, you can bring it by our location at:

1331 South Beckham in Tyler, just south of the hospitals and we can help you diagnosis any issues you are having.

Still Waiting For The Windows Creators Update?

Are you still waiting on the latest update to Windows 10? The “Creators Update” comes with a variety of new features including an updated Edge web browser, a special high performance Game Mode and new Beam streaming service for gamers, new privacy options, and better security update scheduling, but some computers that Microsoft has seen compatibility issues with won’t automatically perform the update.

This new update check is intended to protect users with unusual or problematic systems. In the past, we’ve seen Windows 10 update render some people’s computers unusable, but now Microsoft is being more cautious about who gets automatically updated. Of course, if you were looking forward to one of these new features, it can be frustrating if your computer has been blacklisted for one reason or another.

Computer Repair in Tyler can help you resolve the issues that were blocking Windows from updating and get you access to the latest Windows features sooner. If you’re having trouble with your Mac or PC, give us a call at 903-858-4383, email us at info@computerrepairintyler.com, or stop by our location at 1331 South Beckham between the Big Lots and the gas station.
